Marko Makovec graduated at Law University in Maribor. In 2004 he joined the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia, where he started as advisor to the Director General for International Law and Protection of Interests.
In 2007 he was posted to the Permanent representation of the Republic of Slovenia to the EU, as the National delegate to the Working Party for Western Balkans (COWEB), where he served during the Slovenian Presidency to the Council of the EU.
Since December 2008 he was seconded to the Cabinet of the prime minister, where he served as Principle Foreign Policy Advisor. Besides advising to the Prime Minister he coordinated the foreign affairs between competent ministries and Embassies, as the main negotiator conducting and leading the negotiations with Republic of Croatia on the border dispute, preparing the regular and irregular European Councils, initiating and managing the Summit of the Leaders from the Western Balkans, s. c. Brdo Process.
After the term in the Cabinet in 2012 he returned to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs as the Coordinator for European Councils.
